EMPOWERING TRANSGENDER AND NON-BINARY Individuals in Brighton

Creating an inclusive space for all individuals is central to our care. Core to our approach is recognitionrecognition for who our Service Users are and who they are becoming. This means that our transgender and non-binary friends can find a safe space at Sussex Empowered Living to be who they are meant to be. We will be there every step of the way to support and inform.

Based on continued collaboration with our transgender and non-binary community partners, our specialism was developed over time and has evolved into a service that has positive, long-term impacts for each individual under our care. As a direct result of our involved process, Sussex Empowered Living has become known as the most informed and experienced supported living service for transgender and non-binary individuals in Brighton and Hove.

As we work together with our Service Users, we’ll begin by finding a home near our office in Kemptown: the heart of Brighton and the UK’s transgender and non-binary scene. Being close to our office allows individuals to have a greater sense of security and community, while enabling us to swiftly respond to emergency situations as they arise.

OUR TRANSGENDER AND NON-BINARY SPECIALISM HAS BEEN COLLABORATIVELY BUILT WITH our BRIGHTON-BASED COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND PROFESSIONALS.

HOW ARE SPECIFIC NEEDS MET?

Individuals who have autism, mental health conditions or learning disabilities who also identify as transgender or non-binary have complex needs that require specialised attention and care. At Sussex Empowered Living, we are prepared with the resources and knowledge required to prioritise those needs through our specialist program.

PERSON-CENTRED CARE

Each individual we support enjoys a personalised approach to meeting their needs. By engaging in a partnership with their assigned, highly skilled key worker, individuals will work towards achieving their priorities, life goals and greater levels of independence.

Staff Training

Our staff are trained in areas such as sensitivity, trauma, transition processes and prerequisites, specialist safeguarding issues, the social and medical model, political discourse and intersectionality. Our training program is based on past experiences and advice from transgender and non-binary experts which ensures our staff follow best practise.

COMMUNITY NETWORK

Central to our specialism and staff training is accessing the vast knowledge and resources available in Brighton and throughout the UK. Our network of professionals and community partners enables us to draw on knowledge from experts to continually improve our transgender and non-binary specialism.

DOCUMENTATION

Our inclusive documentation emphasises our commitment to equality. This ensures that, wherever they are in their journey, we are equipped with the proper procedures and resources to empower each person to achieve their goals.

SOME OF OUR BRIGHTON SUCCESS STORIES

Mr. X,  a trans man with multiple complex needs was self-harming frequently prior to arriving at Sussex Empowered Living. As a result of our highly person centred, risk-focused approach, Mr. X no longer self-harms. Currently, we are working with Mr X to reestablish meaningful relationships with members of his family.

Mr. Z, a man with autism and a learning disability, struggled to find care that would meet his complex needs. Prior to arriving at Sussex Empowered Living, Mr. Z had many failed placements, inpatient admissions and the regular involvement of law enforcement. Through our innovative, analytical approach to support, Mr. Z is now flourishing. He has moved from a 2:1 support requirement to 1:1 and is currently exploring his occupational options.

An autistic trans individual, with concurrent mental health diagnoses, entered Sussex Empowered Living with a long history of highly complex behaviours.

As a result of our highly dynamic and relationship-focused approach to support, they now engage meaningfully with staff and have successfully moved from 24/7 care to background support only.

DEVELOPED For meeting complex needs

Our transgender and non-binary specialism has been developed specifically for meeting complex needs.

Developing a specialism to meet the needs of transgender and non-binary individuals who have been diagnosed with autism, mental health conditions or learning disabilities took years of dedicated research. We started by building a network of community partners and medical professionals people with the expertise necessary to collaboratively develop this specialism with us.

Conducting both primary and secondary research was essential to the process. We held client interviews, focus groups and staff workshops and received formal training from medical professionals. We continue to repeat many of these processes today which enables us to remain current and informed.
